Sustainability

Markville Shopping Centre has been recognized by the Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA) for achieving environmental excellence. This achievement is part of Cadillac Fairview’s ongoing commitment to sustainability through its GREEN AT WORK program. Initiatives implemented in Markville’s existing operations will be carried over into the redeveloped Centre. Last year, Markville was the proud recipient of the Facilities Gold Award presented by the Recycling Council of Ontario, in recognition of the Centre’s landfill diversion rate of 75 per cent.

The Transforming Markville project features a number of industry-leading sustainability features and best practices:

  • Light Pollution Reduction is considered in the design of the exterior wall mounted light fixtures
  • A re-design of all Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems greatly reduces the use of ozone-depleting gases (CFCs, HCFCs and Halon gases)
  • Water use will be reduced with the installation of new fixtures
  • Lighting control systems will improve energy efficiency.
  • The design of the building facade considers the long-term durability of the
    materials
  • Carpets, paints, composite wood and laminate adhesives are specified to
be low gas-emitting with low Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) content.

Construction processes will themselves incorporate several environmental best practices:

  • All construction waste will be collected and sorted for recycling, with 70% being diverted from landfill
  • Indoor Air Quality is monitored during construction to contribute to the comfort and well-being of the construction workers and any occupants
  • Some materials sourced for the project is extracted and manufactured
    regionally.
